Complex variation of the human genome and its association with epigenetic changes in the context of brain function

Dr. Alexander Urban
Stanford University
Wednesday, November 16th, 2022 – 3pm
Life Sciences Bldg. LSB 313 – Mānoa campus

Dr. Urban is an Associate Professor at Stanford University in the Departments of Psychiatry and of Genetics. His laboratory is part of the Stanford Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine and the Stanford Center of Excellence in Genome Sciences. There he analyzes how variation in the human genome sequence affects brain development and brain function, with a particular emphasis on complex, structural or/and somatic, DNA sequence changes. Dr. Urban’s laboratory develops advanced genome technology to make it possible to detect and resolve such complex changes in the genome sequence, and also to determine their effects in the brain. After studying in Berlin, Germany, Dr. Urban completed PhD and postdoctoral work at Yale University. In addition to the One Mind Bipolar Research Award he received honors such as, for example, an NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, an Uytengsu-Hamilton Neuropsychiatry Award, a NARSAD Young Investigator Award, and a Jaswa Innovator Award.
